The Promoter

by ZackBrandit 29. August 2008 11:21

We will use a series of posts (like this one) to present our 16 profiles one by one.

These posts will help you better understand our approach with the Zack’s Profiling System which we will be launching very soon.

The Promoter

Often representing the interests of others, Promoters know how to convey an important message and creatively direct the target reader to the right place.

A Blog with a Promoter profile is often perceived as someone with the desire to communicate a message rather than facts. Charm and creativity have a central place in this blog. The blogger has no desire to explain something logically or philosophically, instead he would like us to know how he envisions a specific brand, subject or item and the way we should perceive it.

Promoters will use different techniques for this purpose. The blog has usually some form of a business-like approach; hence the visual quality of the blog plays an important role. It can be formal or fun, colourful or not, but Promoters will often arouse the reader’s senses. They probably uses a personal domain name and a paid or personalised template. The writing style and its layout might be well studied and a “PR”-like feeling could be experienced.

Promoters enjoy interactions, comments and feedbacks and will naturally seek to understand what people like and need in order to make the appropriate connections with his readers. They want to have one positioning voice in the middle of many interactions. Their blog often uses widely used features and becomes a small gathering place for lovers and fans of the Promoter's chosen blog subject.

Promoters like to share and believes in the need to use external links, videos, music and other media, provided it is in his interest. The Promoter’s Blogroll will expectedly have some famous names or brands.

Advertising and affiliations are important and adverts should have a connection with the blog’s subject and its design.

Promoters are often extrovert, has a high number of acquaintances and may use several social networks or media. Those are found on the blog in widget form.

Example of blogs: Advertisers, Marketers, self-proclaimed Top-Bloggers

Zack The Networker

by ZackBrandit 29. August 2008 10:53

I am a Lemur originating from the Berenty Reserve in Madagascar, Africa.

My siblings and I are not among the most famous primates on earth and unfortunately are considered as endangered species for our numbers are dwindling.

Picture taken by Emmanuel "Tambako" Keller

I have often been in touch with humans during my stay at the reserve and after graduation I decided to start my own journey trying to understand human society and their cultures. This experience has helped me blend in and meet amazing people.

Thanks to interest from researchers and some successful animated movies, things seem to improve for us Lemurs.

Having had my share of experiences and understanding human ways, I decided to share some of our lemurian know-how and lifestyle. This is how I came to create the ZackBrandit website with friends I had the pleasure to meet.

While travelling I discovered the Internet and decided to use it and stay in touch with those I met.

I hereby invite you to join my network on LinkedIn and Facebook. I might be joining other social networks if I get invited.

As with this blog, I will use those networks to keep you posted regarding new events and activities.

Please do not hesitate to subscribe and leave comments. I know you are still expecting to learn more about our project and it is with great pleasure that I will share it with you.

Web Something Dot Zero

by ZackBrandit 28. August 2008 16:04

The web has evolved a lot since the ‘90s. We have known Web 1.0, we are living today in the Web 2.0 era and are slowly moving towards Web 3.0.

It seems there is one thing in common and that is the “0”. This zero shows that we are speaking of an evolution or maybe even a small revolution.

Web 2.0 has provided us with interactive web applications, features and services such as blogs, mashups, social networks, wikis and others. We have moved from an individual user’s perspective to a community approach, keeping in mind that it always revolves around the user’s personal experience.

With Web3.0 also known as Semantic Web, we intend to go a step further. The Semantic Web is an extension of the current Web in which information is given well-defined meaning, better enabling computers and people to work cooperatively.

The idea is to have computers tap into metadata and create meaningful relationships without the need for a powerful artificial intelligence.   The Web will be linked in a way that it can be used more effectively across various applications.

The Semantic Web will contain and link resources corresponding to several kinds of objects such as media (images, clips, etc.), people, places, organizations and events.

Web visionaries have been working for some time on this new evolution. Semantic web is a combination of crowd sharing, done today to an extent through tags, natural language processing and machine learning techniques.

Semantic web could change the Web the same way Windows’ metaphoric desk replaced the textual DOS at the end of the last century. A semantic browser will learn from the user’s behaviour and adapt its links.

Gradually and with the help of mind maps and virtual worlds, the web could become an adaptive platform represented by a metaphor based on the user’s interests. This however, is a future step which might result in introducing Web 4.0.

This brings us to Advertising 3.0, an information-rich model where adverts become more relevant and grow to become content. Though it may sound very tempting, the underlying risk is that message and facts can be mixed-up. I believe there is great potential, but like my spandex-clothed friend once learned – with great power comes great responsibility.

The ZackBrandit team believes in the necessity to support a rich and relevant Web. Information is as valuable as the meaning we endow it with. But meaning does not necessarily indicate factual data; life is indeed more than just facts, it is also about the way we as people apprehend the information. At the end of the day, it is us who give meaning to words.

Zack’s Profiling System (ZPS) transforms a particular blog, brand or product into a set of elements perceptually annotated by users. The idea is to offer meaningful categorization based on pertinent criteria. We would like to know how people perceive blogs, brands and products, how they categorise them and use this data to create new relationships.

If the actual rating systems are linear and provide one result for a specific product (usually an amount of points or stars), ZPS has the unique capacity of linking up to 8 different criteria, thus resulting in meaningful profiles. The profile is the result of crowd participation and therefore brings the user’s perceptive meaning into our database. Hence the possibility to introduce a new browsing approach reflecting one’s moods, feelings and personal view.

It is not a replacement, nor is it semantic web. ZPS is a smart but standardised tagging system that will more easily support the arrival of Web 3.0 and its share of advertising.

And we are those embodying it!

Zack The Blog Profiler

by ZackBrandit 20. August 2008 15:52

The ZackBrandit team wishes to provide its community with a unique set of features and tools which are fun and relevant to use. There are different ways to widen social interactions and connect individuals with ideas, consumers, companies, NGOs and other stakeholders of our society. These features and tools will provide each participant with added-value like information, access to specific services, leads, community gatherings, market insight, sales and many more.

Some of these will be invented by the ZackBrandit team and others by partners or community members.

Initially, we would like to bring you what we call the Zilhouette System.

Since I am an avid blog reader and having had my share of experiences in understanding humans for what they are or seem to be (I’m a big fan of crime investigation TV series); I decided to share with you some of my insights. Most people wear various masks or are sometimes understood at different levels. Being a Lemur, I also have my share of personalities that I wish to relate with you. Those will be consequently used as explained underneath. As for the feminine character – I’ve got that covered too because I’ve asked my beloved Zaya to participate.

Let us start with 3 examples out of a total of 16 profiles.

With the exponential increase of e-commerce we also saw an overflow of recommendation oriented solutions. Most use ratings (usually 1 to 5 points) and verbatim messages.

Very few services have their ratings based on more than one criterion and therefore limit the value of the final grade by restricting the provided details. With our Zilhouette System we desire to go a step further by integrating perception and essentially show how brands and products, but also, journalists and bloggers are perceived by others.

Our first approach is to work with bloggers and provide them with a simple tool to see how they are perceived by their readers. It is not a rating tool, therefore there is no good or bad. The feedbacks received from blog readers will enable to depict a perceived blog profile, which will then be represented by one of the pictures above (and more to come).

This profile will help:

  • the blogger understand how he is perceived by others based on his writings
  • new visitors see what kind of blog they are looking at and be able to differentiate “bargain hunters” from “philosophers”
  • ZackBrandit provide specific offers and services based on communities around bloggers
  • additional information to support the study of online social trends.

Each of these traits will be clearly defined and with time will be refined based on your feedbacks.

In our next postings we will explain how the profiling system works and identify the 16 different existing profiles. Meanwhile, I have to dive back into my latest book How to be a Hero for Dummies

Our Vision

by ZackBrandit 20. August 2008 14:09
My surname “Brandit” stands for Branding Bandit.
This name has indeed had a strong influence on my life and the path I have chosen.

Everything we do or say and every action we take has an impact on ourselves. Whether as an individual or a company, we exist in part through the perception of others. This leads to us developing a personal brand. My desire is to link and intertwine our personal brands with others, creating a flow of interactions. Does it resonate like a social network or is it more than that?

 (Adidas World Cup 2006 advertisment)

Companies require advertising to provide information and conviction that their product or service is valuable. It is a necessity for them to survive and grow. Our society actually depends on advertising – it provides work to many and information to countless more. Without advertising our world would indeed be a dull place.

Online advertising is one of the major trends on the Internet. There are a lot of advertising networks and new methods in an industry where everyone wants to get a piece of the pie.  Lots of advertising networks are popping-up while start-ups use those same platforms hoping to monetize their project.

But let me ask you one question to put my proposition in perspective…

What if advertisements could be published for free?
  • Will it not provide the same advantages while limiting costs per impression (CPM) and click frauds?
  • Wouldn’t it help companies and organizations with small marketing budgets?
  • What if companies could invest part of their marketing budget into something more valuable?
  • Will it not become an incentive to the way information is conveyed to consumers?
  • What about publishers, shouldn’t bloggers find a better way to monetize their blog’s value?

Online “social” shopping is gradually enforcing change in the way individuals, groups and retailers interact. The trend is increasing in pace and progressively moving towards evolved affiliation techniques. In the same way Social Networks are fuelled by User Generated Content (UGC), manufacturers and retailers can benefit from social shopping platforms and their User Generated Recommendations (UGR).

Dion Hinchcliffe, founder and CTO of Hinchcliffe & Company and one of my favourite Web2.0 bloggers schematizes online communities in the following way:

He also expresses the need for companies to interact and presents best practices here.

But what if there is something more?

What if those three types could be entwined?

What if services and their promotion could be based on perception and abstraction rather than surfing behaviour?

Let me explain, I like this picture a lot. It shows the way people connect and interact. It perfectly represents what we expect from a social network. But more than that, I love the individual reflections. They symbolize something.

On turning the picture upside-down, we realize the result is the same, but from a different perspective. Our perception provides us with a new image for the same thing, but the action we’ll take might ultimately differ. Reflection and original are transposed.

Our perception alters our behaviour. Hence, developing an algorithm profiling the perception we have instead of the resulting behaviour might become highly valuable. A question though, is it even feasible to create such an algorithm and does it make any sense in an environment shifting to Users Generated Content (UGC)?

Having had a vision, I decided to gather trustworthy people and start this community. Each one of its members wishes for change and substance. Why not join us in providing this added extra?

If the Web is to provide value-added content and opportunities based upon interactions, then it is time to work on it together!

Introducing Me

by ZackBrandit 20. August 2008 12:29

It is said that every now and then, when times are tough, a new hero rises. Protecting society and offering a helping hand to those in need, our hero is often physically impressive, reserved and righteous.

Exactly like me!

Look at those expressive eyes!

I’m Zack Brandit (Zack for intimates) - hero of modern days.

Since today’s world is ruled by fast-paced action, media and globalization, I have decided to look at the big picture and focus my noteworthy efforts in support of social balance by providing equality of opportunities. Our social fabric has become more and more troubled and prone to bitterness due to economic overflows induced by numerous price changes. In short, purchasing power is decreasing and new solutions are needed!

I know it is no easy task to become a hero; I have to forge my own identity and mission. I’ve had to read many stories about human heroes. Some were fearful kings or amazing adventurers and others spandex-clothed possessing strange powers (although I’m not sure they’re 100% human). Others yet have brought to light amazing scientific discoveries.

After much research I have finally found the one hero I would like to follow in his footsteps: Robin Hood.

Like Mr. Hood, I believe in a balance between the different layers of society and that you cannot achieve great victories by yourself. However, times have changed and I cannot picture myself raiding an armour-plated vehicle, nor deprive the rich to give to the poor.

My calling and main purpose is to provide new means to harness the properties of social media such as blogs, micro-blogs, social networks and others, to sustain personal and professional fulfilment. I intend to forge new ties and build trusting relationships between different stakeholders of our society. I strongly believe that with your support as a company or individual, we can achieve high expectations.

Now that I have caught your attention, let me explain our approach…
